"I. M. Moldovan" Elementary School Blaj

“I.M.Moldovan” Eelementary School Blaj lies at the bottom of a hill in the N.V. of Blaj. It was founded in 1920 as a primary school with two classrooms an apartment for teachers. It was meant to provide education for the children in Ciufud – a village situated on the hill in the N.V. of the town (nowadays bearing the name of Izvoarele) – a district od the town of Blaj.

Until 1940, in Ciufud there were only Romanians (190 families), well-known for their prosperous farms. However in 1959 – 1960 the school is profoundly transformed. A new annex to the initial building is built, and the Community Hall (found on the banks of the Tarnava River, in the district now called “Plopilor”) is changed into classrooms.

The increase of the population was due to expansion of the town following the building of the Wood and Furniture Factory where they needed continuously increasing working force, thus a lot of new families moved to Blaj and its districts.

Therefore the number of students also increased and between 1976-1980 there are about 400 students belonging both to the majority Romanian population and the minority Romany population.

As time passes the number of Romanian students decreases while the number of Romany students increases, they being now an important majority in our school.

In 2003 our school is named “Ion Micu Moldovan”, after a scholastic personality of Blaj, for over 25 years a well-known teacher of Romanian, Latin, history and philosophy.

At present, the educational process in our school is achieved as follows:

• Classes 1 – 4 between 8 and 1 p.m.

• Classes 5 – 8 between 8 and 2 p.m.

• Remedial courses primary school

• Remedial courses secondary school

The school activities, and especially the extracurricular ones, have as a target the equal opportunities of the students, decrease of discrimination, elimination of the bullying phenomenon and social integration of our students.  Having this aim in mind we had several school partnerships with institution in Blaj: the Town Hall, the police, the constabulary, both Catholic and Orthodox churches, the Social Assistance Centre FAMILIA 2004.

We are permanently involved in different activities and we hope that the results will be beneficial for the future of our students.
