“AVRAM IANCU” ELEMENTARY SCHOOL, UNIREA

The school in Unirea is certified through documents since 1674, in a register of the Reformed College from Aiud, where you can find the following text: Nicolaus Galfavi Rect(or)Fel-Vincziensis. Which means: ‘’that young man occupied the role of a teacher at the Confessional Reformed School from VinÈ›ul de Sus (Unirea)’’.

Up to the year 1866 the classes were held in a location that was near the Reformed Church in town (that no longer exists today), and there functioned a girls’ class and a boys’ class, in Hungarian language.

In 1877 the state School from Vințul de Sus was opened and all the students were transferred there as the school fees were lower. The headquarters of the new school were at the actual place of the Town Hall of the village.

The number of students was growing as free education for pupils from 1st to 6th grade was implemented in 1897, so the authorities decided to open the School of Agriculture in 1899, which prepared students in the areas of: viticulture, fruit-growing and animal-growing.

It is only after The Great Union that a teaching department in Romanian was implemented, subsequently Romanian becoming the teaching language for most students.

In 1903 the constructions for the actual place of the school began, continuing up to 1964. And in 1908 at the village’s border with Turda a building designated for the agricultural school was built. Subsequently, there functioned the primary cycle, which was moved to the main building only after 2007.

Between 1981-1990 in the unit, besides the primary cycle and the gymnasium cycle functioned the 8 th grade and 10 th grade with mechanical profile classes.

The name of the unit faced some modifications throughout the years: Primary School Unirea 1, The School with 1 to 8 grades Unirea, and in 2012 it was named ‘’Avram Iancu’’ Secondary School Unirea.

Because it is a central school, to which there are assigned the villages that belong to the Unirea commune (Inoc, Ciugudu de Jos, Ciugudu de Sus, Mahaceni, Dumbrava), it attracts children from the entire community. The school population comes mainly from families with a level of education and culture lower than average, with a poor material situation, from the Social Settlement ‘’Saint Veronica’’, Dumbrava,  from Romani families and single parent families.

The schools that are subordinated to the Secondary School ‘’Avram Iancu’’ Unirea are: ‘’Gheorghe Maier’’ Secondary  School Unirea, ‘’Dumbrava’’ Primary School, GPN Nr.2 Unirea, GPN Ciugudu de Jos and GPN Dumbrava.
